I did a lot of research before I bought this gent's folder, and I kept reading that no one had ever seen a bad review of a MCUSTA knife. Stay tuned.
The first thing to note is that New Graham's service was outstanding - a seamless purchase - helpful with shipping. Everything perfect.. Thank you!
The MCUSTA has the attractive (and presumably functional) laminated san mai blade. I like it's shape and it's looks. I believe it is even lighter than advertised, showing 2.0 oz. on my digital postal scale. The action is smoooooth!!! Here endeth the praise.
The Coco scales are of moderate quality and little finish of this open pored wood. There was absolutely no effort to match scales with one being blood red the other just plain brown - opposite ends of the cocobolo spectrum. The liners stick out past the scales in some places - not much - maybe 15 thou, but enough to feel like a flaw. The lock face on the blade tang is about 60 grit finish, making for a somewhat rough disengagement. The most glaring YUK is the back spacer, the inside of which is beyond rough and ugly - reminiscent of the average prison shiv craftsmanship.
The knife is to be an EDC user so it will serve, but I expected more from the masters of Seki.

New Graham contacted MCUSTA Japan regarding this knife and they promptly replaced it with another. The difference is astounding. This is the MCUSTA quality I have read about elsewhere. The scales are nicely figured with contrast and good match over the two sides. The backspacer is cleanly machined and fit and finish are very nice. This one stays with me, so the performance testing begins now.
Extra Kudos to New Graham for having the integrity to actuall post my original review. I now rate this as 5 star.
Rob!
